Wooden Herb Drying Rack

Perfecting the Airflow
As established in our article on The Art of Drying, the key to high-quality botanical preservation is consistent airflow. A dedicated drying rack elevates your harvest and allows the dry prairie air to circulate around every leaf and stem.
Traditional Structures
Historically, drying racks were made of willow or chokecherry saplings lashed together with rawhide. These structures were often built outside the lodge to take advantage of the sun or inside near the smoke hole to use the rising heat of the fire.
Why Use a Rack?
- Prevention of Mold: Plants piled on a flat surface often trap moisture in the center.
- Consistent Drying: Hanging plants ensures that gravity pulls the essential oils down into the leaves rather than pooling in the stems.
- Pest Control: Keeping plants off the ground protects them from soil moisture and insects.
Modern Recommendation
For the modern home harvester, a multi-tier hanging mesh rack or a fold-out wooden laundry-style rack works exceptionally well for small-space drying.
