An infusion is made form the roots and lower stalks to treat diarrhea and pain in the bowels, especially in children. Horseweed is boiled to make steam for sweat lodges, taken as a snuff to stimulate sneezing during the course of a cold and burned to create a smoke that wards off insects. It is quite astringent and is also used to treat diarrhea and čhaŋȟlóǧaŋ dysentery. It is also said to be an effective treatment for bleeding
