Ceremonial & Cultural Notes

Cheyenne

Plant used in the Sun Dance and Massaum ceremonies. Additional commentary: This plant, found in watery habitats, where unknowable beasts were/are believed to live, is and was used in the Sun Dance and Massaum ceremonies. It is symbolic food, stuffed into the eyes, nose and mouth cavities in the buffalo skull; it is ceremonial food offered to Esceheman. Similarly it is placed in the head cavity of the yellow-faced wolf. The sedge is tied with sinew in almost circular bundles and placed in the skull. Feeding Esceheman is part of a prayer that the vegetation continues to grow in plenty and be food for people and animals. In a situation where this sedge is not found, another grass that grows near water may be substituted.193
